Aneignungskultur

The appropriation of space in an urban context is strongly influenced by the respective neighborhood culture. Conflicts over the appropriation of space have come to a head in recent years in particular and spaces are being renegotiated.
In this project, we explore how residents appropriate public space. We want to actively confront passers-by with forms of appropriation in order to raise awareness of new ways of using public space. In this way, we hope to motivate other people who feel like it to join us and confidently take over public space in their neighborhood. In addition, we want to ensure that the distribution of public space is negotiated in a new and fairer way.

However, this does not necessarily have to be a protest-oriented approach, but first and foremost a collaborative and creative process. We want to ensure that residents' inhibitions about appropriating public space are lowered. However, our aim is not to provoke unconscious appropriation at the expense of other residents. Rather, we want to promote community interaction in the neighborhood. We also want to draw attention to the fact that public space can be used by everyone and is a valuable communal asset. The design of public spaces must once again focus more on the needs of residents, and we must work towards this ourselves. This is the only way to make our cities more liveable again in the long term.
